The Global Health Body Raises Warning Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Under one in 10 patients eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it issues its inaugural recommendations on the medications.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to projections, more than two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidance affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with thorough and lifelong care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift significant weight, notes the organization.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the current most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs could only cover around 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline calls on governments and firms to increase access, via measures like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Work

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and boost the sense of being full so individuals consume fewer calories.

Individuals typically see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates users may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the drug, when their typical hunger return.

Being carrying excess weight increases your likelihood for experiencing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
