Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
