Congress Approves Bill to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will require the publication of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The bill next will be sent to the president for his approval. The president indicated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the controversy over the official management of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a public section, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he worried the measure would reveal identifying details of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
